jones bar & cafe

Rainy days are more and more a rarity in these parts, so when one comes, it's more tempting to head out into the world to enjoy the elements than it is to curl up in bed with a book.

When I woke to the sound of tires on wet pavement the other day, I knew I wanted to savor every moment of it. Preferably, outdoors, in search of comfort food with my lover. Setting out to run some requisite errands we decided on bbq, but didn't want to take the last drafty table by the door. That's when we realized we were just across the street from Jones. A dark brick lined bar that's a great evening spot and, for me, an even better lunch spot.

Perfect.

After deciding to sit in a cozy red leather booth against one of the exposed brick walls (versus sitting in the bright, airy, gingham checked cafe area where the same menu is available), we brushed the rain from our coats and settled in for some serious grub. Beer ordered the sausage and onion pizza with a bag of chips (literally!) while I opted for a prosciutto-mozzarella panini served with chive topped mashed potatoes in their own mini cast iron terrine. Our server was sweet (in a genuine as opposed to sugary way) and very attentive, as was the busser who made sure our glasses were constantly full and we had everything we needed. The meal was perfect. The only thing I couldn't figure out is why we don't think to come here more often.

Tip - Make sure you wash your hands before you eat. The bathrooms, and their, ahem, wallpaper, are not to be missed ;)

citizen smith

The majority of the reviews I've seen have focused on Citizen Smith as a dinner destination, but what a great place to grab lunch in Hollywood. They open at 11am Mon-Thurs, there's virtually no crowd giving you the choice of any booth (inside or out) you fancy, and they have a very nice, seasonal lunch menu ranging from $10 (Jalapeno Mac & Cheese) to $21 (NY Strip Steak). The seared Ahi Tuna Nicoise ($16) was perfect in every way.. and the bartender makes a mean Arnold Palmer too.

As for the dinner crowds, if you don't want to be treated like second class cattle by the doormen, make a reservation - even if it means calling in your name last minute from the valet line. The difference is vast and absolutely worthwhile.

chalet

Deja vu sets in for me here since this used to be the location of the old Tophat - a serious dive bar where I was able to get away with a little underage drinking way back in the day.

The exterior hasn't changed much - dark and nondescript - but the interior has been beautifully reinterpreted. It's a well sized (not too big, not too small) space with a long bar and couple of tables on one side, and comfy dark leather booths and banquettes along the other. The walls are stacked masonry (reminiscent of the redo at The Lodge), decked with some vintage flea shop-esque paintings of woodland scenery. Arts and crafts style light fixtures dotting the surround dimly light everything to that perfect, 'don't we all look lovely', hue. In short, it's modern cabin cozy.

Another plus is the alt-eclectic jukebox. Def worth the price of admission. While the bartender was easy on the eyes, and the drinks are easy on the wallet, they weren't so easy on the palette. She could use a few more lessons in mixology, so one star off to that.

All in all, great bar - and in such a random locale, Eagle Rock - I'll be back.

Somehow, The Chalet has yet to be overrun by west side wankers or insufferable east side hipsters, so hurry up and get there before they do!

trader vics

Oh, the memories ... and not just mine. My gran used to hit happy hour here in the 50's when she still had an office in Beverly Hills. Grandma doesn't remember much, but she does recall the Mai Tai's, which are memorable indeed!

This is mid-century Tiki at it's purest. Part of what I love about T-Vics is that not much has changed since then - including some of the bar and wait staff!

The vibe is old school and cool, the drinks are stiff, and the appetizers get tastier with every drink (pass on the sushi, everything else is good - especially if it's fried!). My poison is the Scorpion which is served up with a big gardenia floating on top. Don't be fooled by the girlish exterior- it's a sweet, smooth concoction that'll knock you on your ass. And if that's your goal, just go straight for the Scorpion bowl (it serves 2-4, depending on the crowd and who has to work in the morning).

I've had dinner here a few times and despite being a bit pricey, it's very good, even if only for the kitsch value.

This is one local spot I'll be very sorry to see go - it's slated for demo (date still TBD) to make way for condo development and a possible Waldorf-Astoria hotel. Damn shame and a big mistake if you ask me. But until then, I'll be there drinking up!

Tip: There are some libations that have actually been pulled from the menu over the years for being too strong (I shit you not). As for my faves on that list, there are some things even I won't reveal, but if you ask real nice, one of the older waiters likely will ; )

red pearl kitchen

After all the mixed reviews, I had to check out this new addition to our neighborhood .. We headed over for a pre-holiday weeknight dinner (sans reservation) and we loved it.

Beautiful interior - the red works and with some of the modern touches (the kitchen is behind one red-tinted glass wall of the dining room, and from the right angle, you can actually watch them cook), it doesn't feel chintzy or bordello-like. The dining room was stunning - complete with red-lit xmas tree - as was the lounge area and brand new pool table - a great alternative to waiting for a table in the dining room or trying to eat in the bar, which is also an option.

The drink list is creative and impressive (the Ju-Ju I had was perfect and not too sweet as is usually the case with signature cocktails). The menu has plenty of options for every palate and everything we tried - Lamb Meatballs, fiery hot Five Spice Chicken Wings, Pineapple Kobe Beef Skewers, Giant Prawn Skewers, Foie Gras ShuMai - were excellent and beautifully presented.

Our waitress (who was obviously stoned - no joke) was attentive and we had great, albeit entertaining, service. My only complaint may have been the tres tacky pseudo Chinois ensemble they're all forced to wear. Come to think of it, I'd have to be high to wear that every night too.

No, it's not authentic Chinese dim sum. If that's what you're looking for, head over to San Gabriel or Monterey Park and hit a real dim sum restaurant. But if you're looking for a great new spot on this side of town to have a tasty dinner and drinks with some beautiful decor, Red Pearl is worth adding to your list.

Interesting twist on valet - all the drivers were women in little red fur trimmed hooded parkas. As an added touch, when our car was returned, the valet girls had left a little package of Red Pearl almond cookies on the center console. Nice ending to a great evening.

o-bar

Beer and I first fell into O-Bar walking down the Blvd. after a long night out last Halloween. It's so beautifully designed that it's like stepping into an oasis. I was recently there again and reminded of what a great local joint this truly is.

Don't be put off by the boystown location. This is actually a very straight friendly place. (Do check to make sure you're not going on a "special event" night - unless of course, you're up for a surprise donkey drag show).

As for the cocktail hour and lounge menu, Stephy S. was on the mark in her review. O-Bar is a sure thing for meeting up with friends either at the beginning, or end, of an evening out.

The private dining areas that line the perimeter of the restaurant (the bar is located front and center) are inviting and perfect for a group or party, though, as other Yelpers have noted, the dining experience can be spotty at times.

Happy hour isn't all these boys have in the bag.. Something not to miss is their SUGAR RUSH HOUR. Every night from 10:30p-1:30a they offer a bevy of desserts with drink specials. This can be busy, especially weekends, so do call for a special Sugar Rush reservation if it's not a weeknight.

On a budget? They just launched TICKLE ME WEDNESDAYS where they offer a prix fixe, three-course dinner accompanied by a glass of champagne, starting at $24.95.

Tip: If you're not up for the bar scene check out the "forbidden garden" in the back. It's beautiful this time of year.
